Lesson Review

My lesson today is the role of memory and remembering in the gospel of Jesus Christ.  

In the dictionary one definition of remember is to keep in memory. The Lord expects us to actively remember him.  He has asked his people repeatedly to “remember and do all my commandments and be holy unto your God” (Numbers 15:40).

Sometimes we become too busy with our daily lives that we 

don’t always remember the Lord.

What can we do to “always remember him”?

1.   Search the Scriptures –

The Scriptures have many examples of the importance of remembering.  See 1 Ne. 15:25 & 17:25. We discussed some ways to build a habit of scripture study. Some responses were to set a specific time, study a theme, study as a family, & have them accessible.

2.  Prayer –

President Thomas S. Monson has said, “Whenever it is given, and for whatever reasons, prayer, can solve more problems, alleviate more suffering, prevent more transgression, and bring about greater peace and contentment in the human soul than can be obtained in any other way.” (Church News, 25 April. 1987) See also Alma 34:17-27.

3.   Service –

The Lord expects us to love and serve one another, just as he did. As our capacity to serve grows, so does our capacity to love.

President Gordon B. Hinckley said, “We must surely realize that there can be no true worship of Him who is the Christ without giving of ourselves…If we give such service, our days will be filled with joy and gladness.  More important, they will be consecrated to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and to the blessing of all whose lives we touch.” (Ensign, March 1987, p.5)

4.   Sacrament –

We discussed some ways to better worship the Savior through Sacrament. Some responses were: come prepared, focus on the Savior, remember the promises or covenants made, & be prayerful and reverent.

5.   Keeping a journal is mentioned in the First Presidency message this month. 

President Spencer W. Kimball was quoted, he described that process of inspired writing: “Those who keep a book of remembrance are more likely to keep the Lord in remembrance in their daily lives. Journals are a way of counting our blessings and of leaving an inventory of these blessings for our posterity.”²
